CFP: CRIWG 2010

The Collaboration Researchers International Working Group presents:

***The 16th CRIWG Conference on Collaboration and Technology***

September 20-23, Maastricht, the Netherlands.

The CRIWG Conference on Collaboration and Technology seeks scientific
papers that inform the design, development, deployment, and use of
collaboration technology (groupware) and the work practices they
support. Founded in 1995, CRIWG has become a significant forum for
researchers and professionals to exchange ideas and experiences about
problems and solutions related to collaboration technology.

Most challenges in the collaboration technology field require a
multidisciplinary, multi-methodological approach. CRIWG seeks papers
on groupware from a wide variety of academic perspectives and
epistemologies, ranging from collaborative and exploratory research,
to theory building and testing, applied research, design science,
engineering, and innovative evaluation methods. Researchers can report
their ideas, theories, models, designs and experimental results to
CRIWG either by submitting full paper contributions, in case of mature
works, and shorter papers reporting innovative work in progress. As in
previous years, the authors of the best papers will be invited to
submit extended versions to selected journals. PhD students are
invited to present their research in the doctoral colloquium.

The CRIWG conference is supported by the Collaboration Research
International Working Group, www.criwg.org, an open community of
researchers. Traditionally, CRIWG is organized in remote places
alternating between the Americas and Europe, with a small number of
presentations, fostering critical discussion, team building and
collaboration. The location selected for the CRIWG 2010 conference is
Maastricht, the Netherlands. Delft University of Technology will
organize the conference.

Help needed: English to French translation for Sahana/Haiti

Sahana is free and open-source software developed to support relief
efforts in catastrophic situations. It started with volunteers in Sri
Lanka after the Banda Ache tsunami and has now grown to where it is
being used in international responses. They have just started a
non-profit to make it a stable world-wide resource. (It has a variety of
different modules, individual organizations can use whichever they need,
and can install it on their own servers, or, increasingly, on shared or
donated resources. It has modules for logistics, volunteer management,
family reunification, etc.)

Sahana is being deployed in Haiti and they desperately need people to
help translate it into French (and Creole). The way it worked for
Myanmar was that all the user-facing messages were listed in one long
list, and volunteers would sign up to translate/validate blocks of text
strings.

If you, or someone you know, is interested, willing and able to help,
please go to

http://translate.sahana.lk/wiki/PootleGuide

for further information and to sign up.

CFP: Special Issue of JCSCW: Knowledge Management in Action

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT IN ACTION

Special Issue of
Journal on Computer Supported Cooperative Work (JCSCW)
http://www.uni-siegen.de/fb5/wirtschaftsinformatik/cfp.html

Guest Editors:
- Mark Ackerman, University of Michigan
- Carla Simone, University of Milano-Bicocca
- Volker Wulf, University of Siegen and Fraunhofer FIT

THEME: Organizations of different kinds, from structured companies up to
social networks or virtual communities, are becoming increasingly aware
of the need to collect, organize, mobilize, increase, in sum manage,
expertise and knowledge which characterize their ability to stay alive,
adapt and evolve in a turbulent context. Knowledge Management (KM) is a
keyword under which different organizational and technological
approaches to answer this need are referred to. From the beginning of
the KM discourse, the CSCW community has taken a critical stance both in
asking for applied research in the practices of real organizations and
relating technological and organizational innovations. The Special Issue
aims to collect papers reporting on ethnographically-based or
field-based experiences that are confronted with real situations and
highlight problems, requirements and technical solutions that are
derived from those experiences by taking into account the following
perspectives:

- organizational strategies to enact and promote KM within
organizations, and their relation with ICT technology
- various kinds of knowledge, application domains, organizational
structures, and their implication on KM
- methods and approaches for the design of KM solutions
- techniques and technologies for a sustainable KM (CSCW-based
approaches, web-based approaches, etc.)
- critical success factors for KM socio-technical solutions
- evaluation of KM applications in real situations
- lessons-learned in each phase of the KM application life-cycle, from
conception up to continuous adaptation
- critical comparison of technologies, field studies and strategies in KM
- any other perspective contributing to a better understanding of KM in
action

Papers presenting original research must comply with standards specified
at the IJCSCW site: http://www.editorialmanager.com/cosu/ where it is
possible to upload them.

Papers written in English should be sent by 30 April 2010. All submitted
papers will be blind refereed by at least three reviewers.

Acceptance will be based on quality, relevance, originality of the work
and reviewers' comments. Authors will be notified of acceptance or
rejection via e-mail by 30 June 2010. Camera-ready papers are due by 15
September.

CFP: AoIR Internet Research 11.0 - Sustainability, Participation, Action

Call for Papers

Internet Research 11.0 - Sustainability, Participation, Action

The 11th Annual International and Interdisciplinary Conference of the
Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR)
October 21-23, 2010 University of Gothenburg/Chalmers University of
Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden

The challenge of this conference is to find multiple avenues for
participation and action towards a sustainable future. In a society
increasingly aware of social and ecological imbalance, many people now
see information and communication technologies as key technologies for
solving problems associated with an unsustainable future. However,
while information technology may solve some problems, it can magnify
others. As pointed out by world forums such as the United Nations and
the European Commission, use of ICTs contributes to the unsustainable
consumption of energy and resources. Similarly, unequal access and
exploitative practices remind us that IT is not a utopian answer to
complex social problems. A sustainable future is not only about
greening processes and products at any cost, but also entails social
responsibility, cultural protection and economic growth. Therefore the
conference has a multi-dimensional focus, where the Internet is seen
as a possible liberating, empowering and greening tool.

The conference will focus on how the Internet can function as a
conduit for the development of greater global equality and
understanding, a training ground for participation in debates and
cross-cultural projects and a tool for mutual action; in short a
technology of empowerment. The flip-side of the internet as a tool for
empowerment is the issue of exploitation. Exploitation of resources
and people is what has led to the current crisis, and issues of
exploitation are highly relevant online, from abuse of the commons to
censorship, fraud and loss of privacy and the protection of the rights
of the individual.

Sustainability, Participation, Action invites scholars to consider
issues concerning empowerment and/or exploitation in relation to the
Internet. We ask scholars to specifically consider issues concerning
integrity, knowledge production, and ethics in relation to the
Internet and sustainable development. How do we, as Internet
researchers, regard our work in relation to the unsustainable current
situation and the possibilities of a sustainable future? How far can
we take the Internet, and with it, people, individuals, groups and
societies in order to create an arena for participation and action,
all key elements in imagining a sustainable future? How can we apply
previous knowledge to serve future solutions?

To this end, we call for papers, panel proposals, and presentations
from any discipline, methodology, and community, and from conjunctions
of multiple disciplines, methodologies and academic communities that
address the conference themes, including papers that intersect and/or
interconnect the following:

Internet and an equal and balanced society
Internet as an arena for participation
Internet as a tool and arena for action
Internet and an informed knowledge society
Internet and a green society
Internet and e‐commerce, dematerialization and transportation
Internet and security, integrity and surveillance
Internet and a healthy society
Internet as an arena for cultural expressions, and source of a culture
of its own.

Sessions at the conference will be established that specifically
address the conference themes, and we welcome innovative, exciting,
and unexpected takes on those themes. We also welcome submissions on
topics that address social, cultural, political, legal, aesthetic,
economic, and/or philosophical aspects of the Internet beyond the
conference themes. In all cases, we welcome disciplinary and
interdisciplinary submissions as well as international collaborations
from both AoIR and non‐AoIR members.

SUBMISSIONS
We seek proposals for several different kinds of contributions. We
welcome proposals for traditional academic conference PAPERS and we
also welcome proposals for ROUNDTABLE SESSIONS that will focus on
discussion and interaction among conference delegates, as well as
organized PANEL PROPOSALS that present a coherent group of papers on a
single theme.

DEADLINES
Call for Papers Released: 24 November 2009
Submissions Due: 21 February 2010 (Details here)
Notification: 21 April 2010
Full papers due: 21 August 2010

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
All papers and presentations in this session will be evaluated in a
standard blind peer review.

Format
PAPERS (individual or multi-author) - submit abstract of 600-800 words
FULL PAPERS (OPTIONAL): For submitters requiring peer review of full
papers, manuscripts of up to 8,000 words will be accepted for review.
These will be reviewed and judged separately from abstract submissions
PANEL PROPOSALS - submit a 600-800 word description of the panel
theme, plus 250-500 word abstract for each paper or presentation
ROUNDTABLE PROPOSALS - submit a statement indicating the nature of the
roundtable discussion and interaction
Papers, presentations and panels will be selected from the submitted
proposals on the basis of multiple blind peer review, coordinated and
overseen by the Program Chair. Each individual is invited to submit a
proposal for 1 paper or 1 presentation. A person may also propose a
panel session, which may include a second paper that they are
presenting. An individual may also submit a roundtable proposal. You
may be listed as co-author on additional papers as long as you are not
presenting them.

PUBLICATION OF PAPERS
Selected papers from the conference will be published in a special
issue of the journal Information, Communication & Society, edited by
Caroline Haythornthwaite and Lori Kendall. Authors selected for
consideration for submission to this issue will be contacted prior to
the conference.

All papers submitted to the conference system will be available to
AoIR members after the conference.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS
On October 20, 2010, there will be a limited number of pre-conference
workshops which will provide participants with in-depth, hands-on and/
or creative opportunities. We invite proposals for these pre-
conference workshops. Local presenters are encouraged to propose
workshops that will invite visiting researchers into their labs or
studios or locales. Proposals should be no more than 1000 words, and
should clearly outline the purpose, methodology, structure, costs,
equipment and minimal attendance required, as well as explaining
relevance to the conference as a whole. Proposals will be accepted if
they demonstrate that the workshop will add significantly to the
overall program in terms of thematic depth, hands on experience, or
local opportunities for scholarly or artistic connections. These
proposals and all inquiries regarding pre-conference proposals should
be submitted as soon as possible to both the Conference Chair and
Program Chair and no later than March 31, 2010.

FEE WAIVER
In order to increase the diversity of participation in the AoIR annual
Internet Research (IR) conferences, the Association of Internet
Researchers will make available up to three conference fee waivers per
year. The number of fee waivers will depend first of all upon the
ability of the conference budget to sustain such waivers (a judgment
to be made by the AoIR Executive Committee upon the advice of the AoIR
Treasurer and the local organizing committee) as well as upon the
quality of the applications for fee waivers.

Applications for fee waivers are invited from student or faculty
authors whose paper or panel proposals have already been accepted via
the AoIR IR conference reviewing process. All applications should be
directed to the Vice-President of AoIR, and must be received by June
30 of the conference year. Late applications cannot be considered.
More information and submission guidelines will be published in a
separate announcement.

CFP: Information Interaction in Context IIiX 2010

==============================

Information Interaction in Context 2010
http://www.iiix2010.org/
==============================

[Papers and posters are due April 11, 2010]

The Information Interaction in Context conference (IIiX) explores the
relationships between and within the contexts that affect information
retrieval and information seeking, how these contexts impact
information behavior, and how knowledge of information contexts and
behaviors improves the design of interactive information systems.

The intention of IIiX is to foster an integrated approach to
information access by bringing together members of the research
communities in information seeking behavior (Behavior Track),
interactive information retrieval (Interaction Track), and information
retrieval system design (System Track). A list of topics of interest
can be found at the conference website.

Submissions are sought that integrate two or more of these
perspectives. While it is understood that one area might be the
dominant theme of the submission, the expectation is that authors will
provide an explicit discussion of how their submission informs at
least one other area. For example, a submission that primarily
discusses system aspects should provide mention of how the system
impacts interaction or behavior. A paper that primarily discusses
information behavior should discuss implications for interaction or
system design. Papers that investigate multiple themes directly are
especially welcome.

PAPERS & POSTERS

IIiX encourages the submission of original, high quality research
papers that have not been published previously and are not under
review for another conference or journal. All submissions will be
reviewed by an international program committee. Full papers,
describing completed research results, should be no more than 10 pages
in length.

Provocative and interesting poster submissions, describing planned,
in-progress, and late-breaking results are also sought. The aim of the
poster session is to encourage debate, discussion, and future
collaboration. As well as being reviewed according to typical measures
of originality and technical merit, submissions will also be reviewed
for their suitability for an exciting and engaging poster session.

Poster papers should be no more than 4 pages in length. In addition,
authors of accepted posters are expected to include a 1 page image of
their posters (in PDF) as part of their FINAL submissions. It will be
included alongside the paper in the ACM Digital Library. This image
SHOULD NOT be included as part of the initial submission.

Papers and posters are due April 11, 2010.

DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM

A Doctoral Consortium held in conjunction with the main conference
provides an opportunity for doctoral students to present and discuss
their research with senior researchers and other doctoral students in
a seminar format. The Doctoral Consortium focuses on 1) advising
students regarding currentcritical issues in their research, and 2)
making students aware of the strengths and weaknesses of their
research as viewed from different perspectives.

Submissions should include a short thesis description of 1,200-1,500
words and a statement of support from the applicant's thesis advisor.
Additional details (including information about how to submit) can be
found at: http://www.iiix2010.org/doctoral.php. Submissions are due
on April 30, 2010.

HCIR WORKSHOP

in conjunction with Pervasive 2010

*Important Dates*
-----------------

Submission Deadline: February 01, 2010
Notification to Authors: March 08, 2010
Camera-Ready Papers: March 17, 2010
Workshop: May 17, 2010

*Scope*
-------

Mobile devices in general, and mobile phones in particular, present unique
challenges not only in terms of user interface, battery life, and form
factor, but also in terms of ensuring their users' privacy and security.
Privacy and security are often in conflict with another and have been the
topic of many research projects. Emerging mobile payment and ticketing
solutions require the secure transmission and storage of financial
information, while electronic health records or access certificates/tokens
might imply the use of highly sensitive personal information on such
devices. Securing the potentially massive amount of interactions using
mobile devices is difficult, because typically there will be no a priori
shared information such as passwords, addresses, or PIN codes between the
phone, its user, and the service they want to use. Additionally, mobile
devices often lack powerful user interfaces to support classical
authentication methods.

The 2nd International Workshop on Security and Privacy in Spontaneous
Interaction and Mobile Device Use (IWSSI/SPMU'2010) provides a forum
to discuss these challenges and to put forward an agenda for future
research. The workshop is intended to foster cooperation between research
groups and to establish a highly connected research community. Authors of
selected workshop submissions will be invited to submit an extended
version to a special issue in a renowned international journal.

Topics of interest for this workshop include, but are not limited to,
the following items as they appear in the context of spontaneous
interaction and/or mobile device use:
* Authentication protocols and methods for device pairing or
user authentication
* Sensor-, context-, and location-based authentication methods
* Authorization, access control, and trust management
* Logging and auditing of spontaneous interactions with mobile devices
* Network and system models
* Security and privacy of mobile phone users
* Security and privacy issues in mobile phone networks
* Privacy and anonymous/pseudonymous interactions
* User interfaces and models for user interaction on mobile devices
* Making use of spontaneous interaction in applications
* Public perception of security and privacy issues of mobile phones
* Legal and social issues of security and privacy for mobile phones
* Options for lawful, auditable, and restricted tracking and
surveillance using mobile phones in law enforcement

*Contributions*
---------------

There will be two separate categories for submission:

* Full papers: We solicit novel contributions of up to 6 pages
(ACM Format)on any of the topics of interest or related areas.
These papers must not significantly overlap with other papers
previously published or submitted for publication elsewhere.
Accepted papers will be published online on the IWSII/SPMU09
website. Authors of selected submissions will also be invited
to submit an extended version to a special issue in a renowned
international journal.

* Position papers: Position papers should be no longer than 2 pages
(ACM Format) and may present already published work in the context
of this workshop, work in progress, as well as ideas and concepts
for future research.

We encourage authors to submit to both categories if deemed appropriate.

An international program committee will select around 12-15
contributions. Authors of accepted full and position papers will be
invited to give short presentations at the beginning of the workshop
with brief discussion phases, followed by an open panel and more
specific discussion groups to discuss common ground and open
challenges. The open panel is also a forum for informally presenting
demonstrators, which will be actively encouraged. Video and other
supplementary material will be published on the workshop web page to
provide further incentive for showing prototypes.

Contributions must be sent by email to <iwssi@lists.inf.ethz.ch> no later
than February 01, 2010, and should be in PDF format. If you have any
questions, we encourage you to contact the organizers at the above
email address.

in conjunction with the 19th World Wide Web Conference 2010

April 27, 2010, Raleigh, NC, USA
http://www.dl.kuis.kyoto-u.ac.jp/wicow4/

* WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION*

As computers and computer networks become more common, a huge amount
of information such as that found in Web documents has been
accumulated and circulated. Such information gives many people a
framework for organizing their private and professional lives.
However, in general, the quality control of Web content is
insufficient due to low publishing barriers. In result there is a lot
of mistaken or unreliable information on the Web that can have
detrimental effects on users. This situation calls for technology that
would facilitate judging the trustworthiness of content and the
quality and accuracy of the information that users encounter on the
Web. Such technology should be able to handle a wide range of tasks:
extracting credible information related to a given topic, organizing
this information, detecting its provenance, clarifying background,
facts, and other related opinions and the distribution of them, and so
on. The problem of Web information reliability and Web data quality
has become also apparent in the view of the recent emergence of many
popular Web 2.0 applications.

* TOPICS *

The aim of this workshop is to provide a forum for discussion on
issues related to information credibility criteria and the process of
its evaluation. We invite submissions on any aspect of information
credibility on the Web. Topics include, but are not limited to:

- Information credibility evaluation and its applications
- Web content analysis for credibility evaluation
- Author's intent detection
- Content quality and credibility in Web archiving
- Credibility of Web search results
- Search models for trustworthy content on the Web
- Conflicting opinion detection
- News credibility
- Multimedia content credibility
- Credibility evaluation of user-generated content (ex. Wikipedia, Q&A)
- Information credibility evaluation in social networks
- Analysis of information dissemination on the Web
- Spatial and temporal aspects in information credibility on the Web
- Information credibility theory and fundamentals
- Estimation of information age, provenance and validity
- Estimation of author's and publisher's reputation
- Sociological and psychological aspects of information credibility estimation
- Users study for information credibility evaluation
- Persuasive technologies
- Information credibility in online advertising
- Web spam detection
- Data consistency and provenance
- Processing uncertain data and information
- Modeling trust on the Web

CFP: Final call for submissions to ISCRAM 2010

ISCRAM2010: 7th International Conference on Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management

DEFINING CRISIS MANAGEMENT 3.0

May 2-5 2010
Crown Plaza Hotel
Seattle, Washington USA

Just over another couple of weeks to submit short papers, discussions and practitioner reports.  We already have over 80 full research papers submitted to and under review for ISCRAM2010.  Alongside their presentation of completed work and new findings we are anxious to have a number of shorter work-in-progress papers, practitioner reports, discussions, panels and other presentations that will stimulate wide discussion and shape future thinking.  You have until January 18th to submit these.  If you have ideas or suggestions that you wish to discuss please email us on iscram2010@iscram.org.

UPDATE

Submission of work-in-progress, discussions, and practitioner papers remains open until January 18th 2010.

When submission of full research papers closed at the end of November, over 80 papers had been submitted and these are now going through full double-blind, academic peer review.  However, ISCRAM conferences are much more than presentations of research results.  They are full of vibrant discussion and networking opportunities.  We are still seeking three types of submission to stimulate discussion, focus on practitioner needs and priorities and explore research still in progress:

1.        Work in progress and discussion papers.
2.        Practitioner reports and discussions which raise issues, examples and case studies, examples of best practices, improvements, and significant insights or examples.
3.        Demonstrations.

** NOTE ** if anyone wishes to discuss ideas for a discussion paper or panel before submitting their proposal on the submission site, please email iscram2010@iscram.org

Full  details of the calls are available at www.iscram.org.

There is also a call for participation in the doctoral colloquium: see www.iscram.org.

Submissions should be made through www.conftool.com/ISCRAM2010.

ISCRAM conferences present the latest findings from academia and the field on the design, development, implementation, use and evaluation of information systems in the domain of crisis management and response, through a unique program of academic research, practitioner cases and technology demonstrations, with plenty of opportunity for discussion and social events. As always the conference will be multi-disciplinary drawing together perspectives from across all socio-technological domains. Human behaviours are as important to us as the technologies that enable us to
share information and situation assessments quickly and in increasing volumes.  The theme for ISCRAM2010 is Defining Crisis Management 3.0.  Our aim is to look forward at the conference and consider how our rapidly changing technologies may change the way that we respond to crises in our ever more interconnected world.  While we particularly solicit papers, discussions, case studies and demonstrations emphasising the conference theme,  we welcome papers covering all aspects of information systems for crisis response and management.

Further details of ISCRAM2010, as they become clear, will be published on http://www.iscram.org and through its discussion and mailing lists.

We look forward to seeing you in Seattle!!

Cooperation with ACM, IEEE, and IFIP (Pending)

http://cisedu.us/cis/cts/10/

Submission Deadline: January 15, 2010

Brief Description:

Dynamic, on-demand, whole life-cycle, multi-domain, coalition, fusion between
security technologies and models.

Collaboration relies on distributed systems that combine different resources, often provisioned on-demand for the duration of the mission or project. Security services are an important component of the collaboration infrastructure that ensures normal uninterruptible reliable operation of the collaborative systems. The open Internet and networking environment, over which the modern collaborative systems operate, impose a number of common and specific security threats and attacks (spamming, worms, session hijacking, buffer overflow, denial of service, social engineering, etc.). Collaborative organizations require better security properties (strong authentication, efficient encryption, Mandatory Access Control, integrity, non-repudiation and availability). Nowadays, collaborative organizations use new technologies such as mobile devices, smartcards, wireless networks, high performance networks, cloud and grid computing, multi-agent systems. These environments introduce new needs, requirements and difficulties related to security. Hence, collaborative organizations and technologies face several challenges in the field of security.

This Workshop on Security and Collaboration, to be held as part of the 2010 International Symposium on Collaborative Technologies and Systems (CTS'10), will focus on security issues related to collaborative systems with emphasis on distributed environments, Grid and cloud based resource virtualisation and on-demand provisioning, multi-agent systems, mobile and wireless cooperation. The aim is to have a dedicated workshop that fosters closer interactions among researchers and users communities, providing an excellent opportunity for them to meet and discuss their ideas. The workshop will address issues related to the security infrastructure and services design, implementation and operation. It intends to address new security challenges and present new ideas and solutions addressing modern security requirements, specific methods of access control that should allow large scale cooperation, use of mobile technologies and smartcards, enable intrusion detection, system recovery and healing in the context of cooperative systems.

CFP: CHI workshop on Models of Social Information Systems

Call for Participation: Cognitive Models of Social Information Systems

CHI 2010 workshop
April 11th, 2010
Atlanta,Georgia,USA

Note: Deadline is Jan 6th, 2010.

Website:http://www.humanfactors.uiuc.edu/cognitivemodelworkshop/

The main goal of this workshop is to connect researchers from
different areas whose work focuses on the development of
models of user behavior in social information systems. Our hope is to
integrate ideas from diverse domains such as (but not limited to) HCI,
cognitive science, AI, psychology, computer science, information
science, and computational linguistics to generate novel perspectives
on understanding, characterizing, and predicting system
characteristics and user behavior at both the individual and aggregate/
social levels. We also hope that his workshop will provide a venue for
researchers in both academia and industry to discuss the use of
cognitive models to inform designs of future social information
systems in diverse application areas.

We broadly define social information systems as systems that support
social functions. Difference forms of social information systems have
gained significant popularity over the last decade. For example,
social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace and social
tagging systems such as del.icio.us and CiteUlike.org attract several
thousand users a day. While serving different social functions, these
systems provide its users increased social presence and opportunities
for easy collaboration and social interaction. User behavior on these
systems has been generally conducted based on analysis of snapshots of
long-term user interaction patterns such as logs of user activities,
connections between users, etc. But, very little is known about the
cognitive mechanisms underlying these interactions. A good
understanding of the individual cognitive mechanisms is important for
engineering better interface representations and interaction methods
that support user behavior in social systems. Additionally, models
that aim at characterizing these mechanisms can complement existing
research and provide a basis for a more complete explanation of
emergent social and collaborative behavior in social information
systems.

Submission

We welcome submission from researchers and practitioners who are
interested in developing computational models of social information
systems. We particularly welcome submissions from diverse disciplines,
and we welcome and value suggestions about themes or directions of
research related to this area.

Please submit an 3-5 page research or position paper about your work.
Papers will be reviewed and selected based on their relevance to the
workshop and ability to contribute to the discussion.

Email your paper, in PDF, to socialcog2010@gmail.com with the subject
line "CHI 2010 Cognitive Models Workshop" by Jan 6th, 2010.
Authors will be notified by January 20th, 2010. Papers should be in
the ACM SIGCHI submissions format.

CFP: ACM CHI 2010 Workshop on Context-Adaptive Interaction for Collaborative Work (CAICOLL 2010)

ACM CHI 2010 Workshop on
Context-Adaptive Interaction for Collaborative Work (CAICOLL 2010)

April 10, 2010, Atlanta, GA, USA

Submission deadline: January 6, 2010
http://www.caicoll.org
========================================================================

WORKSHOP GOALS

This workshop addresses facilitation of collaborative work by context-adaptive techniques. Context-based adaptation can support users in a variety of ways, e.g., by offering the tools most appropriate for a certain type of collaboration, by providing templates for artifacts to be produced, or by filtering content relevant for a joint activity. While adaptive (single) user interfaces have been an area of research for considerable time adaptation for collaboration is far less investigated.

The notion of context in collaborative work raises a variety of interesting research issues. So far, attempts to structure and classify the multi-faceted concept of context have been mainly directed at individual, rather than cooperative usage scenarios. The importance of common ground, e.g., for electronically mediated communication has been pointed out repeatedly, but theoretical concepts have hardly been translated into explicit models or concrete adaptation mechanisms. We also see a major challenge in integrating 'exogenous' physical context such as location, time or device used with 'endogenous' context factors such as the users' roles, topical interests, experience profiles or used collaboration tools. For this purpose, integrated, coherent representations of these context aspects will be needed, making them explicit and exploitable by adaptation mechanisms. Ontology-based context models promise to provide coherent representations but are still in their initial stages. Other important issues are how to combine individual contexts into shared collaborative contexts, and how to combine folksonomy-based bottom-up approaches with the benefits of standardization that ontologies traditionally provide. Finally, it is largely unresolved how to define effective and acceptable adaptations for groups. While there has been a considerable amount of research into supporting co-located or remote meetings, more general issues of supporting collaboration by adaptations are still open.

The workshop aims at identifying and structuring context factors for collaborative work, trying to elaborate a generalized notion of context including physical and tool-related aspects, common ground related to content and process of the collaboration, and other factors. We will also discuss strategies and methods for making these context aspects explicit by representing them through suitable models, e.g., by ontological models of cooperative context. These models will serve as input for discussions on how to manage and use such context in real-world scenarios. These activities will serve laying the groundwork for an initiative to build a shared context ontology for this area.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

An initial list of research issues discussed at the workshop comprises the following questions:
- How can the multi-faceted concept of context be structured and classified for cooperative situations?
- What are methods for integrating 'endogenous' physical context with 'endogenous' context factors such as the users' roles, activities, topical interests or experience profiles?
- How to combine individual contexts into group contexts?
- What are suitable models and techniques for representing context for the purpose of adapting cooperation support systems? Is there a perspective for a shared context ontology for cooperative work?
- What are effective and acceptable adaptations at the interaction, tool or content level we can implement in systems used for collaboration?

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

Context plays an increasingly important role to adapt systems to users' needs and to make access to large information spaces more efficient. Yet, in the area of collaborative work the potential of context-based adaptation of IT systems has so far not been investigated and exploited to a sufficient extent. There is a lack of methods that take into account the manifold aspects of context such as physical, activity-based, thematic or social context in an integrated fashion.

The workshop aims at identifying and structuring context factors for collaboration, trying to elaborate a generalized notion of context for this field. We will discuss strategies and methods for making these context factors explicit by representing them through suitable models, e.g., by ontological models of cooperative context. A potential outcome is to provide the groundwork for an initiative to build a shared context ontology for cooperative work. A further goal is to collect and analyze methods for managing and using context in real-world scenarios, including combinations of folksonomy- and ontology-based approaches.

Persons interested in participating should submit a 2-page proposal describing their background with respect to the workshop theme, their proposed contribution and an initial reaction to a number of research issues published at the workshop website (http://caicoll.org). Proposals should be sent by e-mail to submission@caicol.org. Upon acceptance, participants will be asked to provide an extended position paper of 5 pages four weeks prior to the workshop which will be distributed to participants. Workshop results will be summarized on the website. Depending on the submissions received we plan to publish the workshop results to a wider audience, e.g. as a special journal issue.
